My Story
Intro
"Comics" may be defined as "a series of pictures which tell a story or make a point" and as such they are neither a new phenomenon nor the exclusive invention of any single country or culture. Modern-day comics are simply one of the latest incarnations of a narrative picture-story tradition which has been in existence for thousands of years around the world. Yanuar is bringing this tradition back to Indonesian students to teach them about creativity and thinking outside the box.
About Me
My name is Yanuar Rahman, I come from Jatibening, Bekasi, Indonesia. I love art, especially graphic design. Since my childhood I like to draw, to read books especially comics and in my youth I have always dreamed of becoming a comic artist or designer. My dreams came true when I entered Bandung Institute of Technology to study Visual Communication Design as my major.
Now I live in Bandung, Indonesia and established my own business called Pipilaka Comic School. Right now, my big dream is to build the school where every person feels inspired & "back to live". Where people can find new things, get the insights and knowledge.
In recent years I began to like to learn business and management and I feel this area is very challenging for me. My hope is to learn more about business and management, sso I plan to complete a master somewhere abroad.
Talking about being an entrepreneurship, I really enjoy being an entrepreneur even though I did not understand it at first, I just followed my desire to realize dreams and my ideals. I am glad to be free and to become an entrepreneur, as I can do anything I want, I feel free to learn, free to decide, free to choose my way of life and other things that can not be obtained if one does not become an entrepreneur. By becoming an entrepreneur I hope I can provide benefits to many people, I love socializing with people from diverse disciplines.
My Venture
It is all began from my worried about lots of comic books imported from abroad (especially Japan, the United States and Europe), while the local production of comic books is very small. Over time running, the youth generation (born after year 2000) is rare recognize the Indonesian comics. From all that case the idea was born, to bring back the spirit that is implemented in making comics.
After long discussions with my four friends about to find a way to realize the idea, finally we have found a concept, that is: "education and knowledge is the foundation of all forms of changes." Therefore we decided to create an educational institution on how to create comics.
We give name to this institution: Pipilaka Comic School.
Pipilaka’s main goal is to develop comic in Indonesia through the education for the young generation. Pipilaka is the place to learn how to make comics for children and teenagers, so they were able to develop the potential of comic as a visual culture in the Indonesia.
We customize the learning method so the students are able to create and develop comic as a medium of expression. So while they express their talent they can make artworks in the form of comics. In this case, we teach all the method from the basic, for example, from how to find story ideas, how to create images until how to publish the artwork. In addition, there were also outdoor activities such as visit to the comic publisher, the gallery, follow the talk show, workshops and other activities related to the comic.
So once again, with the establishment of this comic school, we try to facilitate the young Indonesian generation who want to learn to make comics, but does not know what to do or where to go.
I want to overwhelm Indonesia with the high quality local comics, of course with increasing the quantity of young talents that work in the field of comics.
My biggest wish is to build Visual Industrial Complex, while the other is to improve the mental generation of young Indonesia to be able to compete with other countries in their work, particularly in the field of creating comics. Furthermore, with the great quality of young talents, we can make the comics (and other creative industries) as one of the backbone of the economy in Indonesia.
